The Blue Grass State

I didn't plan our trip from Sikeston, MO to Florence, KY very well. I thought it was going to take us two days, but when we were going over the trip on Friday, we found it was really just a little more than six hours. Ugh! Now, what do we do? Drive just three hours, spend the night somewhere and then drive another three?

I called Kentucky State Parks to see if we could get into our site on Saturday instead of waiting until Sunday. Well, that was a no. So, we decided to drive as long as Randy felt like it and left Sikeston around 11am on Saturday morning.

We drove to LaGrange, KY around 5:30 or so and decided to stop for the day. And there just happened to be a Cracker Barrel parking lot there for us to overnight in! Wasn't that a coincidence! :) We settled in for the evening after going into CB for dessert and coffee. :) This was our 72nd CB since retiring. Checking 'em off slowly but surely!

This morning we got on the road about 9am - after having breakfast at CB, of course! Didn't save any money on this parking lot overnighter! We drove just a few miles to a Pilot Travel Center to fuel up. Our destination, Big Bone Lick State Park, was just 51 miles up the road. Check in time was not until 2pm and we had just an hour's drive. I called to see if the folks in our site had checked out yet, but they hadn't. The camp host said we were welcome to come on in and just pull into a vacant site until our site came available. Not having any other place to hang out, we decided to do that, hoping our site would open up soon.

We got to the park about 11:30 and our site was still occupied - check out time is 1pm. No problem, it looked like they were in the process of breaking camp. Well, seems these folks took the 1pm check out time seriously. They took forEVER to leave. Of course, they were within their right to do so; we were just antsy. Finally at 12:50, they pulled out. And we pulled in. :)

We were a bit more anxious than usual to get set up because Ray & Judy were having a cook-out with their kids and wanted us to join them. No matter how fast we try to set up, it takes an hour and a half. We could have just done the basics, but I didn't want to come home and have to do more stuff. Better to get it done and relax. All was finally done and Randy went off to the bath house to get his shower while I showered in the rig. We finally got back in the truck to head to Ray & Judy's about 3:30 or so.

It was a great reunion! Much hugging all around. We first met Ray & Judy in January 2005 in Palmetto, FL at Frog Creek Campground. They were our neighbors and have become great friends. While we no longer go to Frog Creek, we make sure to keep in touch with Ray & Judy during the year and have visited them in Kentucky three times now. They are a wonderful couple and we always have a good time with them.

Tomorrow we'll go back to their place. They are kindly allowing me to do laundry there and we'll just sit and chat and get caught up with each other's families.

Until the next time . . .
