Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania

After being slugs for the past two days, we decided to get out of the RV and do something constructive. Well, I've been going to Curves every day, but then we've just vegged in the RV and done nothing to stimulate our brains.

Remember a couple of weeks ago we went to Strasburg and rode the train, but didn't get to the museum? Well, that's what we did today. The museum is actually called the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, not the Strasburg RR Museum, like I thought. It is filled with all different types of locomotive engines, passenger cars, cabooses, etc. The museum is over 100,000 square feet of trains.



Although this is not my thing, Randy really enjoyed walking through the exhibits and reading the various info on each of the trains. I did get lots of pictures, a few of which I've posted here. You couldn't get on most of the trains, but there were several that allowed you to look through plexiglass at the inside and a couple that you could actually climb inside.

This engine has "starred" in many movies, including Hello Dolly.



One of the exhibits I liked best wasn't even a train. It was a piece of the Broad Street Station that was located in Philadelphia. It is a medallion sculpture that was part of the building and dates from 1881. It is just one of the few surviving pieces of this historic building. I think it is so cool when history is preserved in some way.


There were also several horse-drawn carriages throughout the museum - even a hearse from 1889! Situated along the platforms were benches and baggage carts, just as if folks were getting ready to board the trains.

And I never thought about this, but of course snow would have to be removed from the tracks in order for the trains to run, right? Well, there was a train snow plow on exhibit! Who'd a thunk it?

We had a nice day together. You know, it's great to be able to do these things with your best friend; and it's even more special when that best friend is your spouse! Even when you're doing something that's not quite "your thing," it's still fun.

Tomorrow's laundry day! Yippee! The best part about laundry day is that we are at Lindsay's so we get to play with Reagan! I've only seen her for a couple of minutes since Saturday!! I'm beginning withdrawal symptoms. :) And tomorrow evening, I'm horning in on, er, I mean, joining Lindsay at dinner with a friend of hers from high school, Lacenda. We saw Lacenda last year when we were here, too. She is a wonderful young woman and we always enjoyed it when she would hang out at our house when the girls were in high school. I love that Lins has maintained friendships with her buddies from school.

Very Laid Back Day

Hey there. Not much to share with you today. We had a very mellow day. I did go to Curves and update finances, but that's about the extent of my doings for the day. Oh, yeah - I did make dinner! :)

As I shared yesterday, we have nothing on the calendar until Thursday, so unless something momentous happens, I'll probably take a break from posting. I mean, how many times can you read about how lazy we are!?!?!!?? :) Plus, I don't want to make anyone jealous. :)

Beginning of A Quiet Week - I Think

From what the calendar looks like, this is going to be a rather quiet week. Not too much going on until the end of the week when we celebrate our niece, Megan's, wedding.

This morning Randy and I went to a new church, Grace Fellowship, in Seven Valleys. It's amazing how many churches have the word "grace" in their names. We were active in Grace Community Church for several years before we hit the road and its mother church was a different Grace Fellowship. Anyway, we enjoyed today's service. It's a large church, much like our Grace is. Seems to have many ministries for every stage of life. I'm sure we'll go again. We do enjoy worshipping with our friends, Lee & Cheri, though, so that'll be a hard call. Maybe we'll alternate! :)

The rest of today has been spent enjoying the cooler weather we're having. Love it!!!! I don't think it got above 83 degrees and then a very short, but strong, line of thunderstorms went through (hail, too!) and it has cooled off even more. This is how Randy & I like it - low humidity, 70s. Ahhhhh! :) We can have the windows open, sit outside in the screen room. Lovely.

I did want to share a couple more photos with you from our romp in the park yesterday. This park is adjacent to the Dover Community Center. Also located on the property is the first Dover Jail, built in 1904. The funny thing is the first occupants of the jail were the masons who built it. They were arrested for becoming inebriated while celebrating the completion of the jail! Isn't that a nice way to say thank you? I do like old buildings, though, so here you go.

This evening is being spent enjoying the Olympics coverage. I just love the gymnastics and diving. Of course, we have to cheer Michael Phelps on - he's a hometown boy!

Boys are Working - Girls are Playing . . .

And isn't that the way it should be? :) We had a great day today. Well, I had a great day, Randy had a hard day working at Jason & Lindsay's.

Jason had to re-side their shed so that it would meet their HOA requirements. This meant he had to tear off all the original siding and then apply the new siding. He asked Randy helped him. I was very impressed. I thought it would be a two day job for sure. But, the guys worked hard all day, from 10am until 6:30pm. They got the whole shed sided and now all Jason has to do is paint the doors. Good job, guys!




Of course, while they were working, Lins, Reagan and I had to find something to do. So, we went to one of the local parks. That is something this area does very well. There are several parks and they all have great playground equipment. We had a blast. Reagan just loves being outside and she really, really, really loves to swing. I think she would swing all day if someone would push her. Of course, wouldn't we all? :) She did stop swinging long enough to try out the other equipment such as the climbing wall, slides, etc.



Oh yeah. When we first pulled up to the park, we saw you have to go down steps to get to it . . . OR you can slide down the hill on one of the two slides provided. Well. You know what we did. Reagan and I took the slide down, of course. :)



There was one other contraption that Lins and I couldn't figure out how kids could use it. I didn't have any problem because I'm fairly tall, but Lins could hardly reach the top. It was a type of personal merry-go-round. Not really, but I don't know what else to call it. There's a stool on the ground that turns and over top of it is a round handle that turns as well. You stand on the stool, grabbing the handle and then just begin swiveling. It was great!! You go round and round and round as long as you can stand it. Lins took a video of me making a fool of myself. What fun!!

After about an hour at the park, it was time to go home and get some lunch and settle down for Reagan's quiet time. Of course, Reagan did not want to leave the park; there were a few tears. Poor little girl - she just never gets to have any fun.

The afternoon was spent quietly. I worked on the computer while Lindsay puttered around the house and the guys continued to work outside on the shed.

Once Reagan was up from her nap, we went outside for awhile. The neighborhood kids were out and Reagan is not one to be left behind, let me tell you. Lins got Reagan's "big girl" bike out so that she could practice riding it. She did pretty well for her first time. She's got to get the pedaling down - she brakes when she means to pedal forward. But, she's getting it. Ya gotta admit, she looks pretty cute riding it!



The guys finally finished up the shed. They were ready for some dinner. After dinner, it was time for us to go home. Randy was beat, beet red, and ready for a shower and relaxation. Another day was over.

Longwood Gardens

Yesterday Randy, Lindsay, Reagan and I went to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA which is about an hour and a half from us. Longwood Gardens is a beautiful horticultural experience. Yes, experience - you can spend days exploring all the gardens, waterfalls and fountains before you see everything.




Longwood Gardens has a rich history - more than 300 years old! Of course it began as the rest of our country did - cared for and lived in by a tribe of Native Americans, the Lenni Lanape tribe. This area was eventually taken over by William Penn who then sold it in 1700 to a Quaker farming family. Samuel & Joshua Peirce planted an aboretum on the property in 1798 and the trees they started are still standing today. Pierre duPont, of the duPont Chemical family, purchased the property from the Pierce family in 1906 because he wanted to ensure the preservation of the those trees. Mr. duPont then began planting the flower gardens, fountains, and conservatory we enjoy today. He worked on his "design" from 1907 through the 1930s. And what he did then is pretty much what we saw yesterday. His home on the grounds is very imposing.





There are many different temporary exhibits that are shown in the Gardens. This summer there is a Tree House exhbit. We explore two of them, the Bird House and the Lookout Loft. Reagan had a blast climbing the Bird House with her Pop.



She wanted to see the birds' bedroom and where they sleep. :) The Lookout Loft overlooks a streambed and gives you info on the ecological conditions of the area. Reagan had fun looking through the periscope.


We also explored part of The Conservatory where there are so many different plants, flowers and grassy areas - even one just for children! Reagan enjoyed that a lot. Pop did too - we lost him in there!!






One of the last things we did was walk through the Flower Garden. Such a gorgeous array of flowers - the colors just blew me away. Many, many reds, which is my favorite color. I was never one for landscaping our home, but I've always loved beautiful landscaping. I was just too lazy to do it. :) Imagine that!



We had a lovely day. Reagan was great. I think she enjoyed the flowers as much as we did. As always, seeing things through her eyes makes life that much sweeter. :)

Celebrating a Very Special Birthday

Today we finally were able to celebrate our love granddaughter, Kelly's, 10th birthday! She turned 10 July 2, but between her family's schedule and ours, this was the first time we were able to get together.

I call Kelly and her sister, Kate, our "love" granddaughters because they are actually no blood relation whatsoever. Their mom, Amita, and I worked together at Grace Community Church for about 4 1/2 years and were very close. Amita used to be bring Kelly to work in her infant seat and she would bring her to me. Kelly would sit on the floor by my desk and I would rock her with my foot while I worked. She was our first grandchild. She is the one who named me Nana. She is a very special young lady. Kelly, Kate and their parents, James and Amita, remain very special to us. Since we have begun traveling we are unable to see them as often as I 'd like, but we are sure to see them during the summers and at Christmas.

It was great catching up with the family today. Amita and I can chat for hours and not realize the time has passed! (I know, I know so hard to believe!) James and Randy sit with us and interject their thoughts whenever they can jump in. :) The girls are growing into such sweet young ladies. They are so very different, but both exhibit boundless joy. I love spending time with them. It's just never long enough.

A Slow Day

Just another day in paradise. :)

Had a hard time getting moving this morning for some reason. I can only figure it was because I slept until the alarm woke me (which is unusual - I usually wake up before it goes off) and it was an overcast morning which makes it easier to sleep in. In any event, I was a bit sluggish this morning.

I persevered, however, and had my quiet time then hit the road to go to Curves. After that, it was over to Lindsay's to do laundry. Yes, usually that chore is done on Thursdays, but we have a special day planned for tomorrow, so I had to do it today. I am just so darn flexible!! :)

Got some Reagan time in, and then she and Lindsay went out to do some errands and then attend story time at the local Borders. Soon after they left, the laundry was done, so I was on my way back home.

Once home, it was the usual - catching up with all my blog reading, watching some recorded shows and taking a nap. :) This is some tough life.

Now, dinner's in the oven. Trying a new recipe - Baked Ranch Chicken. So easy, just mix a package of dry ranch dressing mix with some bread crumbs; coat the chicken with that mixture and bake it at 325 for about 45 minutes. Even I can do that!! We'll see how it tastes.

That's it for today. So You Think You Can Dance is on tonight and it's finale week. I sure do enjoy this show. These kids are so darn talented. Tomorrow we are going to visit with Kelly and Kate and their parents. We are finally going to celebrate Kelly's birthday! I can't wait to see the girls.

Oh, and it's our eldest niece's birthday today! Of course I would be killed if I shared her age, so I'll be good and keep it quiet.

Spending the Day with Reagan

Got back to Curves this morning. Felt like I hadn't been forever when it really had only been since Thursday. Funny how your body gets used to an exercise routine and seems to miss it when you deviate. Even MY body and it doesn't even like exercise!! ;)

Had to scooch back home quickly after Curves so I could grab a shower and get back out the door to get to Lindsay's by 9:30. We were going to the movies again with Jason, Lins & Reagan. Today's showing was "Veggie Tales: The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything." I love Veggie Tales. And it's so silly because the characters are all different vegetables and fruits, but somehow they seem believable. Anyway, we had a good time watching the movie AND Reagan. :)

We got some lunch at Subway after the movie and then it was time to get back to Lins' so Reagan could settle in for her quiet time before her nap. First, though, we drove by the park where a carnival was scheduled to take place tonight. Glad we did, 'cause we found out the carnival had been cancelled and rescheduled for tomorrow night. Thunderstorms were forecasted for tonight and we thought maybe that's why it was rescheduled.

We spent a quiet afternoon just hanging out at Lins' while Reagan was down for her nap. She took a great one - almost 3 hours! Soon it was time for dinner which Lins graciously made for us. Then we played outside for until the bugs started using us for dessert!

Time for us to go home. We're settled in our recliners before the TV and relaxing for the night. Tomorrow's laundry day this week!

An Easy Day

Yesterday was spent catching up with Lee & Cheri. They had been away for a couple of weeks and Cheri and I hang out together once a week or so when we are in town. We always have a good itme with them.

Today was dentist appointments for both of us. I need to get a new nightguard and Randy had to have a tooth extracted. I was a little concerned for Randy, but that whole process took less than 10 minutes. I was surprised. And Randy felt fine. A little numb, but fine.

After the dentist, we stopped at the post office and then went on home. I didn't want to push Randy in case his gum bled or something. We had a nice quiet day catching up on some of the TV shows we had recorded. I did some work on the cross-stitch project I've got going. And Randy never had any problems with his gums.

Late in the afternoon Lins called to see what our plans were for dinner 'cause Jason wasn't going to be home until later this evening. Well, I'm always up for seeing Lins & Reagan AND going out to eat. Lins said she was in the mood for Chinese food which was great 'cause we hadn't had that for awhile. Randy isn't big on Chinese, but he needed to eat soft foods today, so soup was good for him.

We had a nice meal. Reagan was entertaining as usual. Just an hour or so together. I'll take any time with the girls I can get. As we were saying our good-byes, Reagan hugged me and said she didn't want us to go. I LOVED IT!! Of course, when it's time to say good-bye in September, I'm not going to love it so much, but I won't worry about that until then.

Tomorrow's movie day! We're all going to see a Veggie Tales movie at the freebie theater. And there's a carnival tomorrow night we may go to. We'll see what happens.

New Year's Eve in August

Our New Year's Eve in August didn't go quite as planned. The weather was off and on all day. We started out very overcast and a bit muggy this morning and the forecast was for thunderstorms in the afternoon. We hoped they would come and go before dinner time. And, at first it seemed they would.

About 1:30 this afternoon the wind whipped up, thunder and lightning came and then the rains poured down for about an hour or so. Then, the sun came out and it was rather pleasant.

At 4:30 we headed up to the party. I couldn't believe all the folks who were already there, set up and ready to party. Lots of people had set up tarps with their chairs and tables underneath. We found some space for our chairs near a few people we knew and started one of our favorite past times - people watching. There's just nothing like watching people, we just love it! :)

Dinner was announced about 5pm and we all lined up to fill our bellies. The campground provided drinks, pit beef and ham as well as paper goods. The rest of us brought a covered dish. The food tent had two rows of tables with more food than should be allowed. Oh, my goodness, there was lots of food. Of course, we gorged ourselves and, just as we were finishing, the rains came again.


The thunder and lightning announced the rain before it hit. But then it poured!! We even got a little hail thrown in. The rain would lessen a bit and we'd figure it was over, but then it came back with a vengeance. Finally, after hanging around for awhile and not being able to sit anywhere because our chairs were soaked, we decided to pack it in and come home. It seemed the rain was going to hang around for awhile.

The rain finally did stop about 7:30, 8:00, but we had already settled in for the night, so we didn't go back up to the party. We can hear that it's going on, though, 'cause the band is playing. Oh, well. We did get a good meal out of it, at least.

Tomorrow we're going to spend the day with Lee & Cheri after church. I'm excited because they've been away and I've missed them. It will be good to catch up. They've had a busy couple of weeks and I want to hear all about their adventures. Cheri even became an aunt while she was gone!

Busy Day

Spending money can be sooooo exhausting! :) We had quite the busy day, as is usual on the first of the month.

We started out at the campground office so we could pay our electric bill for July, site fee for August, and deposit for next year. They got lots of our money this morning!

Next stop was breakfast. We've been driving by the Shiloh Family Restaurant for the last couple of summers and we keep saying we need to try it. It's one of those local diner-type places that we usually like a lot. We weren't disappointed today. The atmosphere is homey and although the pancakes were a little on the dry side, we'll most likely go back.

After being sufficiently nourished (most than sufficiently, actually!), we made an impromptu stop at the eye doctor's office. We've been meaning to make appointments, but just hadn't done it yet. And we were passing right by the office, so we figured it was as good a time as any to get that done. Another thing checked off the list. Our appointments are for September.

On now to the bank. Don't know if I've mentioned this before or not, but the closest branch of our bank is about 45 minutes away. Yeah, it's a pain. Another reason we only go once a month. So, it's a big deal to go to the bank. But, we got there without incident, took care of business and was back on the road within 10 minutes or so.

Last stop was Super Wal Mart for our big grocery run. We do a major grocery run the first of each month. We try to buy non-perishable items for the month as well as meat & chicken. We started this awhile ago 'cause I figured we have the most money at the beginning of the month, so why not ensure we have food? It seems to be working well for us.

Anyway, the store was BUSY! We didn't get there until noonish and it's always busy at that time, plus it seemed to take us longer than usual to get through the store. We finally got out of there a couple of hours later. Whew.

When we got home, some neighbors, Barry & Penny, were out and they came over to look at our rig 'cause they are thinking of buying a 5th wheel. They have a travel trailer now. We spent some time chatting with them and once they left, we put all of our groceries away. They had invited us over to see their trailer so after getting the groceries put away, we walked over to their place. They are just across the lane from us. We chatted for awhile and got to know they a little. That was nice.

Back home, it was spinach quesadillas for dinner. After dinner I updated the finances for the month and got the b'day and anniversary cards addressed for the month, too. Now I am all caught up until next month! :)

That's it for today. Tomorrow evening we're celebrating New Year's Eve in August here at the campground. From what I understand, it is a fun night. I'll let you know. :)

July 2008 is History

I gotta tell you, I thought this month would NEVER end!! Randy and I were just talking about this the other day. So many people have commented on how this month has flown by, but not to us. We have felt like this month has been two months long. Not quite sure why . . . but there it is.

Anyway, we are now looking at just six more weeks here in PA. I bet these weeks will fly by just because we'll be leaving. We've got a couple of big events first, though. One of our nieces is getting married in two weeks and I am excited about that. She and I are pretty close and I am thrilled she has found a young man who cares so very much for her. I think he'll take good care of her.

Secondly, Reagan will turn THREE the day before we leave. Of course, there will be much celebrating and excitement. It's hard to believe she'll be three and starting preschool this year. Seems like we were just sitting in that waiting room at the hospital awaiting her arrival. Whew. Talk about time flying by . . .

We received a cell amplifier/booster system today. We ordered it hoping that it will enhance our cell phone and air card reception in those areas where it is spotty. (We are in one of those areas right now.) When we got home from Lindsay's today, Randy got right on setting it up. We do have better cell phone reception and so far I've kept three bars up on the air card w/o having to restart. So, it seems it's doing its job.

Nothing more to share tonight. Tomorrow's pay day - YAY! I love the first of the month, I feel so rich! :) That is, until all of the automatic withdrawals hit. :) So, it's off to the bank and the grocery for us tomorrow morning. Hope you've got something fun planned!

Reflections on a Marriage

Today is my parents' 44th wedding anniversary. When I think of marriage and all it entails, I am grateful that my folks have given me a great model. They loved each other in front of us kids and they fought with each other in front us, too. They laughed, yelled, cried, and showed us what it means to be married. And I am grateful.

My folks didn't have it easy these last 44 years. Daddy married into a ready-made family, complete with 2 kid and a mother-in-law. Mommy had weathered an emotional divorce prior to meeting Daddy and marrying him. So, they had some adjustments to make when they decided to make a go of this family. I'm sure I don't know all the compromises made (and I really don't want to), but obviously they made them and they made their life together work. And I am grateful.

I believe that parents often forget that not only are they role models for their children in behavior as people, but also for how to be a wife or husband. Kids watch their parents and learn how to respond to certain situations by what their parents do. My parents gave me great morals, values and showed me what character means. And I am grateful.

So, Mommy & Daddy, thank you. I hope you enjoyed your anniversary. Thanks for loving each other. Here's to 44 more! :)

Catching Up on the Last Couple of Days

I need to catch you up on our last couple of days. Tried to post last night, but Blogger is giving me a fit. Let's see what happens now.

We didn't make it to Curves Monday morning! And that was one of the reasons we spent the night at Lindsay's! Randy was supposed to watch Reagan while we were at Curves 'cause Jason's out of town. But, Lins was beat from her weekend away and suggested we bag Curves and just get out the door early and get some breakfast on our way to the Strasburg Railroad. So, that's what we did.


Strasburg, PA is a quaint little town that was established in 1733 and I would love to go back and walk its streets and take some pictures of the beautiful old homes in the area. But, the day was all about the trains. The plan was to ride one of the trains and then explore the museum. Well, the museum didn't happen 'cause we were pushing Reagan's tolerance by the time we were done with our train ride. :)


The railroad station has a store, a water tower, a cafe, a photo emporium (you can get pics taken in period costumes), and a couple of children's rides. We got there just before noon which was perfect because a train was just coming into the station. We bought our tickets for an open air car and boarded the train. The train cars and engines are authentic from the era and have been refurbished as needed. The engine that was pulling our train was 110 years old.


The ride was a 45 minute trip and we were so glad we had picked an open air car. While the weather was very warm, there was a great breeze through the car as we sped along. We passed some beautiful farmland as well as a couple of very small towns. The fun was in the ride itself, watching Reagan's face as the engineer blew the train whistle. It's so wonderful to experience life through the view of a child - an innocent joy we tend to lose as we age.



After our train ride, Reagan took a turn around the tracks on the "Cranky Cars." :) Boy, she was working those arm muscles!!



Our next stop was an ice cream parlor in town. We needed some nourishment! Randy & I were still full from breakfast, but Reagan and Lins wanted some lunch. However, we did manage to get some ice cream in us, too. :) The parlor was located in a country store and attached to the town's bed and breakfast. This is just one of those beautiful homes I was talking about!



Once we got home, it was decided that since we were going to the movies with Reagan in the morning, we'd just spend the night again. Yes, we are those annoying guests who just won't leave. :) Actually, Lins thought it was a good idea, too. Randy was going to be needed in the morning to watch Reagan while we went to Curves (we were going, no matter what!!), so we'd have to be back at the house early, so it just made sense.


After dinner, we vegged, watched some TV, and after Reagan went to bed, Lins & I watched a movie. It was "Mad Money" with Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, and Katie Holmes. It was kinda cute, but I'm glad I didn't pay the $8 or $9 movie admission. The best part was being with Lindsay. I love being with her - I'm so glad she's my daughter!


Tuesday dawned and, yes, we went to Curves. (Told you we would!!) Once back home we shifted into fast gear so that we both could get our showers and get back out the door for the 10am showing at the movies. We had to get there rather early because the theater fills quickly.


This local theater does the coolest thing - they show kid/family-friendly movies once a week during the summer and the admission is FREE!! Yep, you read that right - FREE. Isn't that amazing. And everyone is free, not just the kids. Today we saw "Clifford's Really BIG Movie." I was very impressed with the audience. I figured a theater full of little kids and their parents would be pandemonium. It wasn't, really. Yes, there were a few criers, but for the most part, the kids were quiet and watched the movie. Next week is "Veggie Tales." I can't wait!


After the movie we hit Target so Lins could get her fix. She loves her Target!! :) Once the damage was done there, we went to Quizno's for subs and then headed home. It was good to be home. While we are very comfortable at Lindsay's and she is so gracious, it's always nice to get back to our own place.


We did get some fun news this morning. Our son, Kevin, and his wife, Sara, have moved into their new (to them) home on base at Fort Riley, Kansas. I am so excited for them. It's their first home and their life together is just beginning. So many adventures lie ahead for them. I am so proud of their courage to be far away from family and friends. They have a great relationship and I pray that each day they grow stronger in it.

Short Post

Not much to share with you today. We went to church, out to breakfast and then got home just before a thunderstorm blew in. I do love listening to the rain on the roof, I'll tell you. Since it was lightning and thundering, we kept the TV and computer off and just read for awhile. The quiet was kinda nice.

This evening we packed up and went to Lindsay's to have dinner and spend the night. Jason's away for a couple of days. I told Lins I would cook dinner 'cause she had just gotten back from a weekend away. So I cooked a chicken noodle casserole for us; it's one of my favorite meals.

We're spending the night 'cause tomorrow we're getting out the door early to visit the Strasburg Railroad and Museum. Randy's been wanting to do this since last year and we're finally going. It should be a fun day. I'm sure I'll have pictures to share with you.
